Title: Why the ‘bitter lesson’ is wrong for NLP, and how we can make further progress
Why the 'bitter lesson' is wrong for NLP, and how we can make further progress
In the ‘bitter lesson’ paradigm of NLP technology development, training data is assumed to come for free. The negative consequences of this assumptions are becoming increasingly clear, not only for what kinds of methods we develop, but also for creator economy. I argue that both further advances in NLP and social sustainability depend on centering human data, and data attribution provides a pathway towards social and economic incentives to creators.
